00610 Politics – The Christian Has Died to the World
Politics – The Christian Has Died to the World
The Christian has died to the world and received a heavenly calling.
He no longer seeks influence through politics or philosophy.
Instead, he walks in quiet obedience to the authorities God has set up.
He prays for rulers and bears witness to the grace of God in this present time.
His hope is fixed, not on reforming the world, but on the return of Christ.

The Christian has died to the world and has received a heavenly calling.
Instead of engaging in politics or philosophy, he lives in obedience to the
authorities,
prays for them, and bears witness to the grace of God in this present time.
Galatians 6:14 (JND)
“But far be it from me to boast save in the
cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world is crucified to me, and I
to the world.”
➤ Through the cross, the relationship to the world has been fundamentally ended
– the world is dead to us, and we are dead to it.
Colossians 3:2–3 (JND)
“Have your mind on the things that are
above, not on the things that are on the earth; for ye have died, and your life
is hid with the Christ in God.”
➤ The new standard of life is “above,” not in the earthly realm of politics,
power, or philosophy.
Philippians 3:20–21 (JND)
“For our commonwealth has its existence in
the heavens, from which also we await the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour.”
➤ The Christian is a citizen of heaven while on earth. His task is not to shape
the kingdom of this world but to bear witness to Christ as the heavenly Lord.
John 18:36 (JND)
“My kingdom is not of this world; if my
kingdom were of this world, my servants would have fought…”
➤ Christ rejected every political form of power. His disciples are to follow the
same spirit.
Romans 13:1–2, 7 (JND)
“Let every soul be subject to the
authorities that are above him; for there is no authority except from God, and
those that exist are set up by God… Render to all what is due to them: tribute
to whom tribute is due; tax to whom tax; fear to whom fear; honour to whom
honour.”
➤ The Christian recognizes that God Himself has given governmental order. He
obeys, pays his dues, and lives peaceably – but without political activity.
1
Peter 2:13–17 (JND)
“Be subject to every human institution for
the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to rulers… Honour all men;
love the brotherhood; fear God; honour the king.”
➤ Obedience and respect are forms of testimony – not political partisanship.
Titus 3:1–2 (JND)
“Put them in mind to be subject to
principalities, to authorities, to obey rule, to be ready for every good work;
to speak evil of no one, not to be contentious, to be gentle, shewing all
meekness towards all men.”
➤ A Christian is quiet, peaceable, and gentle – not combative or ideological.
1
Timothy 2:1–3 (JND)
“I exhort therefore, first of all, that
supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings be made for all men; for
kings and all that are in dignity, that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in
all godliness and gravity.”
➤ The calling of the Christian is prayer, not activism. He prays for peace so
that the gospel may be proclaimed unhindered.
2
Corinthians 5:19–20 (JND)
“… God was in Christ, reconciling the
world to himself… We are ambassadors therefore for Christ…”
➤ We are “ambassadors” – not judges, not reformers of the world. This is the
time of grace, in which God offers reconciliation, not judgment.
Luke 9:55–56 (JND)
“Ye know not of what spirit ye are; for
the Son of man has not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.”
➤ The disciples’ desire to call down fire from heaven was incompatible with the
spirit of grace.
Colossians 2:8 (JND)
“Beware lest there shall be any one who
leads you away as a prey through philosophy and vain deceit, according to the
teaching of men, according to the elements of the world, and not according to
Christ.”
➤ Worldly thought systems lead away from Christ. They operate through pride and
self-will, not the Spirit of God.
James 4:4 (JND)
“Know ye not that friendship with the
world is enmity with God?”
➤ Every entanglement in worldly systems ultimately leads to estrangement from
heavenly-mindedness.
has died with Christ (Gal. 2:20);
lives as a pilgrim in a foreign land (1 Pet. 2:11);
obeys the authorities out of respect toward God,
does not interfere in political matters,
prays for those who govern,
bears witness to the heavenly calling,
waits for the return of Christ – not for a reform of the world.
